Climate activist Phiona Boonabaana underscores youth’s essential contribution to the circular economy transition during the 2023 Green Economy Summit. The event, themed “Building A Climate Action And Sustainability-Based Economy,” was held on August 9 at the Kampala Serena Hotel.
Boonabaana stated, “Youth play a crucial role in the transition towards a circular economy, using platforms to connect and inspire others. Despite Africa’s climate emergency, youth exhibit resilience and adaptability.”
She emphasized that youth can foster circular economy innovation through digital technology and social media, spreading awareness and sharing success stories. However, limited resources and institutional barriers hinder their progress.
“To drive policy advocacy, youth must engage governments and leverage social media for broader impact,” Boonabaana affirmed.
Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, the honorary chief guest cabinet minister, stressed the importance of investing in clean energy infrastructure. He stated, “Clean energy investments reduce our carbon footprint and create employment and economic growth opportunities. Our journey to a green and sustainable economy necessitates strategic innovation, collaboration, and policy reform, with a focus on renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower.”
The Green Economy Summit was organized by Green Economy East Africa in collaboration with its partners.
