UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Vanessa Nakate calls for “unified action” in achieving a Just Transition

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and Ugandan climate activist, Vanessa Nakate, has urged everyone, including fellow activists, to abandon isolated efforts and work collaboratively for a just transition.

Nakate, who also founded the Rise Up Movement Africa, emphasized that isolating oneself from other teams hinders the fight for climate justice and a fair transition. She delivered this message on Friday, August 11, 2023, while inaugurating the two-day Just Transition Summit organized by the Tard Foundation at Kampala’s Silver Springs Hotel.

“We’re all part of a system, and if one part breaks, the whole system suffers. Let’s unite, avoiding silos, and tap into the power of children and youth in the climate space,” Nakate stated.

She stressed the significance of recognizing and amplifying the contributions of various individuals, whether they are teachers, lawyers, journalists, environmental activists, or others engaged in climate discussions.

“As a movement, we’re like a chain. The work of each member matters because a successful operation relies on all pieces working together,” she emphasized.

The Just Transition Summit took place amidst escalating global climate crises, including heatwaves, floods, food shortages, and extreme weather events. Scientists believe transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy is essential, but the process must be equitable and transparent.

Nakate expanded the concept of a just transition, noting that it extends beyond technological solutions. She emphasized its relevance to those directly affected by climate change, especially women and children in global south nations like Uganda.

Numerous other speakers, including Dr. Charles Batte, founder of Tree Adoption Uganda, Nakawa Division Mayor Paul Mugambe, and Tanzanian Southern Africa Youth Forum envoy Laurel Kivuyo, contributed to the summit’s discussions over the two days. They highlighted the vital role of involving youth in policy discourse and shared insights on greener economic activities that promote development and alleviate poverty.
