With the need to combat climate change and increase in the use of renewable resources, Kenya a country located in East Africa has decided to take the bull by the horns in this venture.
Currently , Kenya has the biggest Wind Power Project “Lake Turkana Wind Project” located on the shores of Lake Turkana covering 160 square kilometers and has a capacity of 310 MW. .The wind farm comprises 365 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 850 kilowatts and it has boosted the countries electricity supply by 16% since its opening in 2019 by the former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The Kenya Electricity Generating Co is settling for less according to the country’s 2030 plan of completely abandoning the use of petroleum and fossil fuels. The power producer plans a 1,000 megawatt wind farm that is projected to be the largest on the continent.
The facility will be situated in the northwestern county of Marsabit, near the 310 megawatt Lake Turkana Wind Power Ltd. park that’s currently the continent’s biggest wind plant. KenGen expects to connect to the national grid in 2028.
Apparently ,Kenya already derives about 92% of its energy from renewable sources including geothermal and hydroelectric dams. By 2030, officials there hope to raise that percentage to 100%, and William Ruto, the president of the country, is vying to become Africa’s top voice against global warming.
Other Countries like Egypt borrowed a leaf from the Lake Turkana project and they have projected a 10-gigawatt project valued at $10 billion.
