During the two-day Just Transition Summit organized by Tard Foundation from August 18-19, 2023, Climate Activist and founder of the Kampala Climate Cafe, Crispus Mwemaho, urged local communities to actively participate in the Just Transition process.
“Achieving environmental and economic justice through a just transition relies on involving local communities directly. They bear the impact of changes and must have a say in decision-making. Building personal connections and addressing their real concerns fosters ownership and cooperation,” emphasized Mwemaho.
He emphasized the importance of addressing climate change and employment insecurity as part of realistic community engagement, promoting trust and action.
“Inclusive participation empowers all, including marginalized groups, giving them a voice. By offering viable solutions and promoting inclusivity, the path to a just and sustainable future becomes a shared journey,” he stated.
Other summit speakers, such as Dr. Charles Batte, founder of Tree Adoption Uganda, Nakawa Division Mayor Paul Mugambe, and Laurel Kivuyo, representative of the Tanzanian Southern Africa Youth Forum, highlighted youth involvement in policy discussions and eco-friendly business ventures.
The summit concluded with a youth declaration on just transition, to be presented at Africa Climate Week in Nairobi and COP28 in Dubai next month.
