VIDEO : Climate activist Linda Evelyn Namulindwa calls for easy access to transition information

Climate activist and water resources engineer Linda Evelyn Namulindwa is urging the government to ensure easy accessibility of information about the just transition for the public.

Just Transition is a potent concept crucial to addressing climate change while advancing social equality. It integrates environmental sustainability, workers’ rights, community well-being, and global partnerships.

Namulindwa stressed the necessity for programming and training people about the switch from fossil fuels to clean energy to be easily available during the Just Transition Summit on August 12, 2023. In response to questions regarding the creation and execution of a Just Transition agenda in African economies depending on mining, agriculture, and hydrocarbons, she addressed this.

“We need to make just transition information accessible to the public anywhere, anytime, possibly through influencers,” said Namulindwa.

As a water resources engineer, she further highlighted that the government should not only pass laws but also enforce them rigorously to ensure proper implementation.

“They usually pass laws and do not implement them, but they should,” she added.

Namulindwa was among several climate activists, doctors, politicians, and scientists at the two-day Just Transition Summit held from August 11 to 12, 2023, at the Silver Springs Hotel in Kampala.

The summit convened delegates from Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania to deliberate on the just transition process before the African Climate Week and Summit in Nairobi this September.

Nakawa Division Mayor Paul Mugambe, the chief guest, praised the youth for advocating climate action and encouraged collaboration with leaders to address climate-related issues in their communities.

Vanessa Nakate, the summit’s lead convener and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, emphasised the summit’s goal of bringing together young perspectives on just transition discussions.

The summit concluded with a youth declaration on the just transition process and the launch of a campaign scheduled to run until April 2024.
